Insertion of sterilized, disposable needle.

My specialty is Worsley Five Element Acupuncture. This system of acupuncture is based on the cycles and laws of nature. By stimulating key points on the body, energy flow to injured or malfunctioning organs and systems is improved. When this vital energy called, “qi” (chee), is full and flowing health is promoted. When qi is not full and flowing, illness can begin.

This stimulation of key points involves insertion of sterilized, disposable needles, fine as human hair. When a needle penetrates the skin, a slight prick, or no sensation is felt. When the needle contacts the qi, the patient may feel various sensations. Descriptions range from sharp to tickling, from a warm breeze, to an electric current, to a dull ache.

A person may feel the energy run along the pathway on which the point lies. Often there are other effects from the needling, such as sudden clarity of vision, a sense of calmness, or the surfacing of an emotion or memory. These are all natural; they show that the qi is moving and a rebalancing is taking place.

Moxabustion, the application of heat to a point before needling is also used. This helps to warm and move energy. (see image at right)

So what are the benefits? Most conditions are treatable with acupuncture combined with adequate rest, nutrition, and exercise. In particular acupuncture has demonstrated remarkable success with the treatment of frustrating chronic conditions. Chinese medicine views the symptoms of illness – physical, mental, or emotional – as warning signs that you are not functioning as an integrated whole. The healing process involves the strengthening of the underlying factors that promote health.

Acupuncture helps to prevent recurring ailments and to recover more quickly if you become ill. You do not need to be sick to benefit from acupuncture; you can have greater vitality and stamina, more restful sleep, more harmonious relationships and a greater ability to care for your own health.
